In the summer of 2005, the three shareholder municipalities founded HSW as an inter-municipal supply company - with the fundamental exclusion of any private sector involvement. The joint company is the municipalities' response to ever higher quality requirements and increasing cost pressure in the supply of drinking water.
The company's governing bodies are the Management Board, the Supervisory Board and the Shareholders' Meeting. The Supervisory Board consists of a total of 13 members. Four members are delegated by the municipality of Bestwig, four members by the town of Meschede, four members by the town of Olsberg and one member from the workforce.

The supply area corresponds to the area of the three shareholder municipalities Bestwig, Meschede and Olsberg. Water is currently supplied to the supply area via 15 extraction plants, 32 elevated tanks, around 670 km of pipeline network, 16,495 house connections and a large number of pressure boosting systems, pumping stations, pressure reducing, control and meter shafts.
Hennesee waterworks
Hochsauerlandwasser GmbH has built one of the most modern waterworks in the Ruhr catchment area: The Hennesee waterworks went into operation in 2016. All solids, including microbiological particles such as germs, bacteria, viruses, parasites and undesirable dissolved substances, are removed from the raw water in various treatment stages.
