HSW invests in security of supply
New emergency power generators and mobile pressure booster system
Meschede. Hochsauerlandwasser GmbH (HSW) is now even better prepared for potential crisis situations: The municipal company of the towns of Meschede and Olsberg and the municipality of Bestwig has put four mobile emergency power generators with different outputs and a mobile pressure booster system into operation. With this investment, HSW is sustainably strengthening the reliability of the drinking water supply in its supply area - especially in the event of power outages or technical faults.
"The new units enable us to continue to operate our water extraction, treatment and distribution systems even if the regular power supply fails - albeit at a reduced level of operation," explains Björn Graw, Deputy Technical Manager at HSW. All gensets are mounted on trailers and can therefore be used flexibly - for example to supply power to waterworks, pumping stations, pressure boosting systems or elevated tanks at different locations.
The emergency equipment is supplemented by a mobile pressure booster unit that can pump up to 50,000 litres of drinking water per hour if required. It is used in particular when stationary pumps fail or maintenance work needs to be carried out. It therefore makes an important contribution to maintaining the drinking water supply in special situations.
The investment costs totalled around 400,000 euros. Half of the costs were subsidised as part of the German government's economic stimulus package in the area of "Measures to safeguard the water supply".
The new technology has already proved its worth: For the first time, both an emergency power generator and the mobile pressure booster system were used during construction work at the Ulmecker Siepen pumping station in Meschede to ensure an uninterrupted drinking water supply during the renovation work.
